A/N: Bloodsucking Bastards AU; I can write Max however I want. Also, my stories are short. Sorry, I don’t have writing endurance to write a lot.
“I should have turned you when I had the chance.”
He lays down next to her and runs his fingers through her hair, once so vibrant, now a gleaming shine of silver, still so beautiful to his eyes. She chuckles weakly at his remark, as she touches his youthful hand, bringing it to her lips. How many times has she kissed those hands, still so young and smooth against her aged face.
“But you didn’t,” she uttered. “That’s how I know you loved me.”
He hears her heartbeat and knows it won’t be much longer. Damn his vampire hearing, normally a gift, but for now, a curse. A lifetime passed in a blink of an eye, her lifetime. But how many more would he have to live without her?
“It’s not too late,” He bargained softly, almost pleading. “You can still be with me forever.”
“No,” She said weakly, as she tried to shift her position on the bed next to him. “Not, like this when I can’t run with you.”
“We don’t need to run, when you can fly with me.” There was a sparkle in her eye that never dimmed, even in her old age. That sparkle that he fell in love with and won’t let go. And for a moment, Max believed.
“We’ve had our moment, kiddo.” She smiled, always so lovingly at him. “Thank you.”
He kissed her lips as his friend, lover, and companion. His most beloved. Her slowing heartbeat echoes in his ear. He could still do it. And she will be with him, always. Or he can just choose to leave with her.
“What are you thinking, Kiddo.” She says. Their eyes connecting, but he just shakes his head.
“I’m just thinking about what we should do today,” he says, trying to sound as upbeat as possible. For her. “What do you want? I can take you through the clouds and see the city like we used to. Whatever you want, we can do.”
“I think…. I want to watch a movie.” She giggles slightly.
“That’s IT? A movie.” Max said in disbelief.
“No, I don’t think I want to go anywhere. I just want to watch a movie with you here.” She continues. “Oh, sweetheart. Don’t look like that.”
Max flashes her a sideways smirk, and in a blink of an eye, he had changed in to sleeping pajamas and plopped down next to her in bed. They were her favorite pair, the silky blue ones with the white polka dots.
“I can’t believe you want to watch a movie instead of flying.” He grumbled, as he fiddled with the remote control. “Okay, what are we watching?”
“I want to watch the very first movie we ever saw together,” she smiled brightly at him. Max did a double take from the huge monitor on the wall to her lovely face.
“You want to watch Office Space?!?!” Max exclaimed. “But Babe…”
She reached an arm across Max’s stomach to snuggle closer, completely content. “Just start the movie.”
“As you wish.”
Max sighed and enveloped her in his arms as the movie played. He didn’t even really need to watch the movie, he already knew it by heart from watching it so many times with her. He knew when she would laugh. Every silly part, he waited for her to laugh. And she did. The high pitch squeak of a laugh that he loved so much. Inevitably, she would say it:
“Oh baby! That manager’s just like you!” She would roar with a teasing laugh. Now said with a quiet chuckle.
And Max’s usual response would have been a resounding, “OH NO! I’M NOT!!!”
He kissed her head softly and leaned his cheek on the top of her head.
“But not with you.” He whispers.
Her chuckling subsided and he feels her become heavier against his body.
“I’m going to take a little nap…. okay babe?” she says, barely audible.
“Not yet, Love. The movie’s not over yet. We’re getting to the good part!” Max said, trying to hide the tremble in his voice. But all he could do is hold her tight and breathe in her smell. “Do you want to just cozy for a bit?”
He felt her nod against his chest.
Turning off the monitor, Max wraps the blanket around them. Feeling her warmth against his body, they kiss and hold each other through the night.
The next day, Max Phillips woke up.
